Important patient information and tips

We always get questions asking what can be done to resolve or improve minor concerns with your teeth or gums.
Very few orthodontic problems do become emergencies, and most can be remedied at home.
If you are in need of our assistance, please call today to set up an appointment

Thoroughly brush your teeth
The best way to ensure a clean and healthy smile is brushing and flossing. Food particles caught in your teeth and braces don’t just look bad they cause gingivitis. Gingivitis is caused by bad bacteria that is allowed to set along the gum line causing a low grade infection in the gums. Over time, it turns into plaque and bacteria that can lead to gum disease, tooth decay and even loss of your teeth.

Use a toothbrush with soft bristles and a fluoride toothpaste. Brush in small, circular motions to get under your gum line. Hold the toothbrush at an angle and brush slowly and carefully, covering all areas between teeth, between braces and the surface of each tooth. Brush up on the lower teeth, down on the upper teeth and the outside, inside and chewing surface of your front and back teeth. Brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth before you rinse.
Floss daily
Use dental floss every day to get between your teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach. Use the reusable floss threader we gave you to floss daily under your archwire.  Slide a small length of floss up and down along the front of each tooth. Your gums may bleed a little when first you begin flossing. If bleeding continues after the first few times, be sure to let us know at your next appointment.
Caring for your teeth
When your teeth or jaw structure don’t fit together properly, orthodontic treatment may be necessary to straighten them and promote ideal function. Left untreated, these problems, often referred to as malocclusions (or bad bites), can cause speech difficulty, premature wear of your teeth and protective enamel and even increase your chance of teeth and jaw joint injury. We can help solve your concerns.
